Last week our bay door project was completed. As we shared previously, our aging doors were replaced and now the final part has been completed. As you drive by the LFC you will note red LED lights illuminated on the exterior of the bay doors. These light not only serve as supplemental lighting, but their main purpose is to prevent accidents with apparatus hitting our doors. When the doors are closed they will stay illuminated red. When the doors are in motion, they will flash red until they are fully open at which time they will turn solid green. With the vision inside the fire apparatus, due to their size, it is often very difficult to see that last few feet of our doors when they are goin up. With this lighting system, drivers can now tell the status of the doors without having to strain to see the tops.
Another added safety item is a "curtain" beam that projects across the opening. This "curtain" is three feet as opposed to the standard single layer beam that projects across the open. The single laser bean can miss the apparatus as they are entering or exiting the station, again, due to their size. These "curtains" will capture the apparatus movement better preventing accidental closing onto the apparatus.
